MFL at Sacred Heart
“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”
Frank Smith
Intent
We believe that children have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages. Through teaching French at KS2, we aim to deepen children’s understanding of the world, develop their global identity and reveal to children the enjoyment and reward of learning another language.
We want children to feel confident and capable when learning French, able to experiment with vocabulary, make links, play games and hear stories in the language. We want our children to experiment with the language, feeling confident when exploring new words and sounds and demonstrating resilience when challenged.
Our pupils will have the opportunity to embed key knowledge through a range of games and activities. This knowledge will be vital to their understanding and use of the language in a range of contexts. We want to lay the foundations for future language learning, encouraging children to enjoy, ask questions and explore other countries, cultures and languages.
Implementation
Our MFL teaching is systematically planned by building vocabulary, skills and knowledge
over time based on the Grammarsaurus scheme of work. French is taught regularly during PPA sessions, starting in Year 3.
Our pupils learn French through songs, stories, role play and games. Our focus is building our pupils’ confidence at speaking French with correct pronunciation as well as developing vocabulary.
Lessons provide opportunities for speaking and listening, as well as developing reading and writing skills. Lessons are interactive and French is spoken as much as possible.
